For example, advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has enabled clinicians to identify even small changes in disc structure. However, even if a disc injury is observed, it may not be the cause of your pain. A study of over 1,200 healthy adults from the ages of 20’s to 70’s revealed that most people have disc degeneration, disc bulging, or disc protrusion without pain and that the percentage of disc abnormality increased with age (Brinjikji and others, 2015).
John Sarno, M.D., author of numerous books dealing with chronic pain, contends much back and other pain is instead caused by the subconscious mind in an effort to keep you from thinking about or dealing with unpleasant or painful thoughts and emotions. That is NOT to say the pain is not real or “all in the patients' head”! No. The pain is very real. Rather, according to Sarno, when the emotions are repressed it triggers physiologic changes that cause pain in the physical body. He termed this tension myositis/myoneural syndrome (TMS), and subsequent researchers have termed it psychophysiologic pain disorder (PPD). |
Anyone can experience TMS/PPD. By constantly pushing themselves, self-motivated and successful people are often quite susceptible. After identifying stress, repressed anger, and other psychological factors in back pain, Sarno described the means by which many of his patients went on to heal themselves without exercise or other physical therapy - often within just a few weeks, in some cases within just days!
